About Me
Hello, I’m Kate Yanchulis, a journalism student at the University of Maryland and a budding sports journalist.
My love of sports began in the womb. The eldest of four sports-obsessed daughters born to Phil and Julie Yanchulis, I inherited my passion from my parents, Washington, D.C., natives and sports fanatics who had the priest at their wedding wear Washington Redskins burgundy and gold and threw me a baseball-themed baby shower.
Through my childhood in Northern Virginia, my zeal for sports grew, soon matched by a fascination with words fostered by a daily subscription to The Washington Post and nightly Scrabble games. By the time I graduated from Bishop O’Connell High School as editor-in-chief of the school paper, I knew I wanted to unite my interests in a career in sports journalism.
I have worked as a sports beat reporter for The Diamondback since my first semester at Maryland. I currently cover the No. 1 Terrapin field hockey team. I have also held two sports internships, one at USA TODAY and one at Express. And now, of course, I have Chris Cooley’s Shorts.

About Chris Cooley’s Shorts
My blog started as the result of an assignment for an online journalism class, the mission to write about a theme, any theme, in multimedia journalism. So, sports junkie that I am, as my theme I chose Chris Cooley’s shorts.
If you think my choice silly, take a look at the photo to the right – you don’t find those shorts blog-worthy? Fine, if you’re really itching for a better explanation – and I do have one – see my first post here. You too can discover the link between multimedia journalism and Chris Cooley’s shorts.
